What a Private Running Coach Can Do for High School Athletes

Many high school runners train with their school teams but still struggle to reach their full potential. The difference between a good season and a breakthrough season often comes down to structured training and individualized guidance.

A private running coach can provide that structure, consistent communication, individual and specific pacing/racing guidance throughout your child’s full high school career.

At Roeder Multisport based in Westfield, Indiana, athletes receive personalized coaching designed to support high school cross country and track athletes across Indianapolis, Carmel, Fishers, Zionsville, Noblesville, and Central Indiana.

With 15 years of coaching experience, 8 years at the NCAA level, and 5 years competing professionally, I’ve seen how targeted coaching can accelerate development for distance runners.

Why High School Runners Benefit From Private Coaching

High school programs often train large groups of athletes at once. Coaches must manage dozens of runners with different abilities and goals. A high school coach often has to juggle teaching 90-120 students all day long during their math class and then overseeing a track and field roster of upwards of 100 athletes. It is impossible for them to give more than a few words of encouragement let alone spend hours educating them and diving into your athlete’s performance and recovery metrics.

A private distance running coach focuses on the individual athlete. My focus isn’t on fitting your child’s training into a the teams best interest. My sole focus in on your child’s individual and long term development. Athletes have full access to me as a coach to ask and learn about all the topics a distance runner needs to succeed.

Personalized coaching can help athletes:

  • develop an individualized mileage progression

  • balance workouts and recovery

  • prevent injuries

  • improve pacing strategies

  • build long-term aerobic development

Many high school runners also lack guidance during summer training, which is one of the most important periods for cross country development.

Private coaching provides the structure needed to stay consistent.

Personalized Training Plans

Every runner responds differently to training.

A customized program considers:

  • current fitness level

  • injury history

  • race goals

  • school team training schedule

  • weekly mileage tolerance

  • Post school season meets

  • College and NCAA Recruiting guidance

  • Incorporating distance runner specific strength training

Training often includes a combination of:

  • aerobic mileage development

  • threshold workouts

  • progression runs

  • hill training

  • strength work

These elements are carefully structured to help athletes improve without overtraining.

Guidance on Threshold Training

Threshold training is one of the most effective ways to improve distance running performance.

Threshold pace is roughly the effort a runner could sustain for 40–60 minutes continuously.

Examples of threshold workouts include:

Tempo Run

15-40 minutes continuous at controlled threshold effort.

Cruise Intervals

4–5 × 1 mile or 6-7 × 1,000m at threshold pace with short recovery.

Threshold Progression

15 minutes moderate + 10 minutes threshold + 5 minutes sub threshold.

These workouts improve endurance and help runners maintain faster paces during 5k cross country races and track events.

Support Beyond the Training Plan

Another benefit of working with a running coach in Indianapolis is ongoing support and feedback.

Athletes receive guidance on:

  • pacing workouts correctly

  • race strategies

  • recovery habits

  • strength training

  • long-term development goals

At Roeder Multisport, coaching is built around a concierge model, providing consistent communication and individualized feedback.

This approach allows athletes to train with confidence and focus on steady improvement.
